By Chief Tom Coe
July 11, 2011

At 11:45pm units from Westminster, Reese, Pleasant Valley, New Windsor and Taneytown were dispatched to the 100 block of West Main Street in Westminster for a reported apartment fire. First arriving Duty 3 (Garbutt) arrived to find a 3 story mixed occupancy with nothing evident which was quickly upgraded to smoke from the second and third floor. Engine 33 and Tower 3 arrived and began to search for the base of the fire. Engine 101 took the rear of the building and their crew went to the attic to search for any vertical fire extension. Chief 3 (Bangerd) arrived and assumed West Main Street Command and the Rapid Intervention Dispatch was alerted. Engine 102 and Command Support from Station 10 was added to complete the first alarm. Interior crews made quick work of a kitchen fire in a third floor apartment and the fire was placed under control in 30 minutes. There were no civilian or firefighter injuries suffered during the firefight. The Red Cross is assisting several occupants of the structure who were not able to reoccupy the structure. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Maryland State Fire Marshal's Office.
