Past President Wayne E. Blacksten

It is with deep sorrow that the New Windsor Volunteer Fire & Hose Company #1 announce the passing of Past President Wayne Blacksten. A 45 year member of the department, Wayne has served in many capacities to include Vice President, President and member of the Board of Directors. He was dedicated to our department and to the community as a whole and his presence will be greatly missed.

Wayne Ellsworth Blacksten, 71, of New Windsor, died unexpectedly Monday, February 29, 2016 at the University of Maryland Medical Center, Baltimore. Born July 26, 1944 in Uniontown, he was the son of the late Charles E. and Margaret E. Albaugh Blacksten. He was the husband of Darlene Black Blacksten, his wife of 49 years. Mr. Blacksten was a 1962 graduate of Westminster High School. He was employed for 23 years with Black and Decker of Hampstead and 23 years with Wantz Chevrolet Inc. of Taneytown, retiring in 2009.

Wayne was an active member of the Union Bridge Church of the Brethren; a 45-year member of the New Windsor Volunteer Fire Co., serving as past vice-president and president and on the Board of Directors; 56-year member and active trumpet player with the Westminster Municipal Band; 35-year member of the New Windsor Lions Club, a current member of the New Windsor Town Council and a member of the Mason-Dixon Blue and Gray Antique Car Club. He enjoyed volunteering, helping and pleasing people in any capacity and he provided lawn and maintenance service for numerous citizens in the community.

In addition to his wife he is survived by a daughter, Lynette Suzanne Blacksten of Fairfax, VA and 2 sisters, Olive F. Boone and husband Roger of Westminster and Marion Stenton of Thurmont. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 7 at the Union Bridge Church of the Brethren, 124 S. Main St., with his pastor, Rev. Dr. James Benedict, officiating. Interment will follow in St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery, Uniontown. The family will receive friends at Hartzler Funeral Home, 310 Church St., New Windsor, 1-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday, March 6. A combined memorial service will be held at 8:30 p.m. by members of the New Windsor Volunteer Fire Co., the New Windsor Lions Club and the Westminster Municipal Band.
