By Chief Tom Coe
February 26, 2018

At 7:52pm units from New Windsor, Union Bridge, Taneytown and Pleasant Valley were dispatched to the 3400 Block of Uniontown for a reported barn fire. While enroute units were advised that several 911 calls had been received. Chief 8 (C. Green) arrived to find an 80' x 50' barn fully involved with bystanders actively working to rescue animals from the structure. Due to lack of fire hydrants in the area Chief 8 requested the Tanker Task Force. Engine 101 arrived and pulled multiple lines to protect the animal rescues as well as protect the nearby exposures. As additional units marked on the scene additional lines were placed in service and the structure opened up to complete extinguishment. The incident used Tankers to move water from an underground cistern at the intersection of Uniontown Road and Jasontown Road as well as fire Hydrants from the Bark Hill Water System to support the fire attack. The fire was placed under control at 8:54pm, the structure and its contents were a complete loss however no farm animals were lost in the blaze. Units remained on the scene for 2 1/2hrs wetting down the final hot spots prior to returning to service. One firefighter did sustain a minor head injury from falling debris and was transported to Carroll Hospital where he was treated and released. The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Maryland State Fire Marshal's Office.
