| On Thursday, October 22, 2026, twelve volunteer members of the New Windsor Fire Department participated in the department's monthly training drill, focusing on vehicle stabilization and extrication techniques. The hands-on training provided members with an opportunity to sharpen their skills, improve teamwork, and practice critical rescue techniques used during motor vehicle accidents involving trapped occupants.
Throughout the evening, firefighters utilized specialized rescue and stabilization equipment carried on Engine 102 to practice securing vehicles in various positions. Proper vehicle stabilization is a critical first step during an extrication operation, ensuring the safety of both emergency responders and patients before rescue crews begin removing vehicle components.
The training concluded with a challenging, scenario-based extrication exercise designed to simulate a motor vehicle collision involving a trapped patient. Crews were tasked with safely stabilizing the vehicle, gaining access to the simulated patient, and performing a dashboard roll, an advanced extrication technique used to move a vehicle's dashboard away from an occupant who may be trapped by the dashboard or steering column.
To successfully complete the scenario, firefighters worked together to remove the vehicle's doors and roof, providing access to the patient and creating the necessary working space. Once these tasks were completed, members utilized hydraulic rescue tools to perform the dashboard roll, moving the dashboard away from the simulated patient and allowing for a successful extrication.
The exercise emphasized the importance of teamwork, communication, tool proficiency, and a coordinated approach to vehicle rescue operations. Each step required members to work together while maintaining a focus on patient care and responder safety.
Regular hands-on training is essential to maintaining the operational readiness of the New Windsor Fire Department. Motor vehicle collisions can present complex and unpredictable challenges, making it important for firefighters to remain proficient in stabilization, vehicle construction, extrication techniques, and the safe operation of specialized rescue equipment.
The New Windsor Fire Department would like to thank the twelve volunteers who dedicated their Thursday evening to improving their skills and strengthening the department's ability to respond to emergencies throughout New Windsor and the surrounding communities. |
